This post will probably only interest you if you need to get a spare key made in Chiang Mai. When we rented our apartment, they only gave us one key to the place, and told us to get one made if we needed another.
That task was easier said than done, and we had a hard time locating a place to get a key made, so hopefully this will spare you the trouble.
Where To Get A Spare Key Made?
A search of Google Maps, and about an hour and a half of reading blogs left me wondering if I would even be able to find a place that makes keys. It’s possible that Tesco Lotus does, but I’m still too chicken to get on a motorbike, and I wasn’t quite ready to hire a songthaew to get there.
Additionally, the first couple of weeks here, it felt like our heads were swimming every time we went anywhere. The pace of motorbikes zooming around, and the feeling of playing frogger every time you cross the street can take some getting used to. When every time you go anywhere seems like an adventure, asking locals questions, and then navigating on their answers can be a challenge!
Kad Suan Kaew Mall
Fortunately for us, we live across the street from Kad Suan Kaew mall. We found an information office, and the attendant was able to direct us to a place where we might be able to get a key made.
We found the key shop in the basement entrance to the parking garage. The key shop is located directly behind where all of the motorbikes park.
The funny thing is, back in the states I HATED malls. I think malls exemplify everything that I dislike about the consumerism lifestyle in the US. Here, Kad Suan Kaew has become practically our favorite place.
Everything we need can pretty much be found there: groceries at Tops, clothing and shoes, western and Thai food, trustworthy ATMs, our gym is accessed through the mall, and so is the swimming pool we’ve been using. It turns out, Kad Suan Kaew is also where we go to get our spare keys made.
